The Big Smoke Big Band
We are a 20 piece big band, based in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. We offer an aggressive mix of
contemporary jazz, funk, rhythm & blues, and
rock.
Our repertoire consists of selections from many
popular bands, including Buddy Rich, Maynard
Ferguson, Blood Sweat & Tears, Cold Blood,
Tower of Power, and Ten Wheel Drive. As well, we
often feature works by prominent arrangers such
as Ron Collier, Bruce Cassidy, Pete Coulman, and
our music director Ilmars (Fudds) Sermulis.
The Big Smoke Big Band features the talent of several
prominent local vocalists. Sharon Smith, Jan Laurie,
Diane Stead, Robin Langdon, and Jaye Baxter perform with
the band on various occasions.
Led by trumpeter Chris Kemp, the band is
comprised of high calibre musicians from the
Toronto area. As well as having significant
professional experience with a wide variety
prominent bands, many band members are former
students from music programs offered at Humber
College, and the University of Toronto.
